Forgiveness of Sin! Who Can Do It?

By: Joseph H. Murray

“Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man (Jesus) is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: And by Him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses” (Acts 13:38–39).

Forgiveness is the lifeline through and by which we reach others for Christ. If we do not contain this precious quality, we are dying on the vine, or we are already dead. This is also true concerning the bearing of any or all the other fruits of the Spirit. Read with me as to what Jesus said about this: “I am the true vine, and my Father is the Husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit He taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, He purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. Herein is my Father (the Husbandman) glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples. As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love” (John 15:1–9).

My dear brother or sister, let’s run a little spiritual test before we go any further into this message. I want you to think of the worst thing that any one has ever done to you or against you. Now, how do you feel? The test is now before you. Are you willing from your heart to let everyone go free? Now! Don’t wait! This determines the depth of your own freedom and deliverance. If you will release everyone who has ever sinned against you, you will feel the forgiving Spirit of Christ returning to you and blessing you as you haven’t felt for a long time. My friend, this is the key that unlocks the door and frees you from Satan’s prison house. Amen! We must be willing to forgive everyone else before we can have our freedom. The lack of this is the main hinderance of the church today, and it’s robbing us of the authority and victory in our daily lives that is rightly ours, through His name.

Brother, sister, let’s arm ourselves as never before and be more than conquerors as we march against the enemy of our souls. We can win! We can win! We can win! The purpose for putting this message in word is to help someone else make the same decision as this writer or speaker did, when God asked me when I was feeling so dreadfully bad, “Are you willing to let everyone go free?” The cry of my heart arose to His Temple in glory and what a relief I felt come into my heart. It’s joy unspeakable and full of glory! Praise God! Now, if you have passed the test as we have laid it out before you, you can truthfully say, I can forgive sin. Sure you can because that’s what you just did when you released everyone the sins against you. Who can forgive sin? The Pharisees said, “No one but God,” but they didn’t know that they were talking to God’s Son when they said that to Jesus. Since He was God’s Son, it made Him of the God family. And since we are His sons and daughters, we are part of the God family. This same forgiving Spirit that flowed through Jesus flows on down into the branches, and we find ourselves doing the same things that He and the Father did – yes! even forgiving sins.
